Two New Docks, 112 Covered Slips: Rebuilding Southern Harbor Marina
Southern Harbor Marina sits on the Alabama side of West Point Lake, near Lanett, on a Corps of Engineers reservoir fed by the Chattahoochee. The covered docks had aged out, and the owner cleared them off the water before coming to Dock and Marina Services for the replacements. We built two new covered floating docks, 112 slips, 56 to a dock, and set them in the fall of 2022.
Two new docks for a cleared site
By the time we came in, the owner had already removed the aging covered docks, so our scope started on open water: build and set two new covered floating docks. One came in at 56 slips of 11′ × 28′. The other at 56 slips of 11′ × 32′, a single size class per structure. Building both at once gave the owner the full covered count back under one scope of work instead of staging it across seasons.
How these docks are put together
Both docks are framed in hot-dipped galvanized steel so the structure stands up to living on the water. We decked them in precast concrete pavers. Over both docks the owner went with a gable roof to shed rain and keep boats out of the Alabama sun.
Keeping 112 slips on station
A floating dock is only as good as what holds it in place, and on West Point that comes down to the anchoring. The lake runs on a seasonal pool, so the water moves through the year and the docks have to ride that fluctuation without wandering off position. We anchored both structures on a winch-and-cable system. The cables run from winches on the docks down to anchors on the lakebed and hold the whole marina on station; as the pool rises and falls, the winches are either cranked in or out to let the docks track the water instead of fighting it. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages West Point Lake and posts its water-level and generation schedule.

Why are the two docks built in different slip sizes?
Each dock is a single size class, one all 11′ × 28′, the other all 11′ × 32′. Keeping one size to a dock lets the marina offer two slip sizes without mixing them on the same structure, which keeps assignments and layout simple.
Did Dock and Marina Services remove the old docks too?
No, the owner had the aging covered docks removed before coming to us. Our scope was the two new floating docks: 112 slips total, built and set as a single project.
